James Gunn to Direct John Cena in ‘Suicide Squad’ Spinoff Series ‘Peacemaker’ at HBO Max

We got our first look at The Suicide Squad last month, and one of the characters introduced in the sneak peek was Peacemaker, played by John Cena. Well, let’s hope we like the character next year because we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of him in the future.

HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order for Peacemaker. Cena will reprise his role from the movie. The Suicide Squad director James Gunn will also return to write the series and direct multiple episodes.

The series will run for eight episodes, and is being described as an action adventure comedy. After the announcement, Gunn answered some questions through his social media and teased some plot details. For starters, despite some reports saying it was a prequel, Gunn confirmed that “we’re holding off announcing the timeline of the Peacemaker TV show until after The Suicide Squad movie.” I think the best bet would be a prequel, but never doubt Gunn to keep the audience guessing.

Gunn also revealed why there is even going to be a Peacemaker series:

“It’s also DC coming to me & saying, “If you could do a TV show about any character from The Suicide Squad, which one would you do 1st?” And I was like, “I’ve been having this idea about Peacemaker…” I’m always driven by what excites me most creatively in the moment.”

Gunn developed the project thanks to COVID-19 and being stuck at home. He will write and direct the series before jumping over to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This doesn’t mean that GotG Vol. 3 has been pushed back. Instead, Gunn is using his vacation time to do another project before he was scheduled to begin work on the upcoming MCU sequel.

Some characters from The Suicide Squad are also expected to appear in Peacemaker, although Gunn isn’t say who just yet.

In the official announcement, here’s what Gunn said on the series:

Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

And here’s Cena’s statement:

“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of ‘The Suicide Squad’ and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for ‘Peacemaker.’ We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

Filming is expected to take place in early 2021. The Suicide Squad hits theaters August 6, 2021.
