James Mangold in Talks to Direct ‘Swamp Thing’

DC Studios may have lined up its first director for one of its upcoming DC Universe Chapter One films.

According to Deadline, James Mangold is in very early talks to direct Swamp Thing. The director is apparently “a big fan of Swamp Thing, and has been chasing the feature for a while. That said, DC is stoked about Mangold. The filmmaker has an offer.” Mangold himself has teased the potential gig, sharing a photo of the DC Comics creature on Twitter. (DC Studios co-head James Gunn subsequently re-tweeted Mangold’s tweet.)

Mangold is no stranger to comic book movies. He previously helmed 2013’s The Wolverine and 2017’s Logan, both starring Hugh Jackman as the titular X-Men superhero. He is also behind the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth film in the long-running adventure franchise headlined by Harrison Ford.

No word yet on when Swamp Thing might enter pre-production, but sources state there’s no script yet. Mangold is also sticking to making Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown — a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet — his next project, so Swamp Thing is a ways away.

We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
