There’s a lot of breaking news in Hollywood happening every minute. In the age of the blockbuster, it’s easy for some smaller movie and television news to slip through the crack. Last Week in Hollywood is our new weekly series highlighting all the interesting news from the last week that we thought didn’t warrant its own post, but was still worth mentioning. It’s less personal opinions and more a hearty roundup of what you might have missed.
Matthew Vaughn Assembles All-Star Cast
Matthew Vaughn has set an all-star cast for his upcoming film Argylle. The globe-trotting spy adventure will star Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. As well, pop star Dua Lipa will make her acting debut on the project and will provide original music for the title track and score.
The film is based on the upcoming 2022 spy novel Argylle from author Ellie Conway. It follows “the world’s greatest spy” ‘Argylle’ as he is caught up in a globe-trotting adventure.
Vaughn will direct from a script by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman). The movie will be the first of at least three films in the franchise and is set in America, London and multiple locations across the world. Shooting starts this August in Europe.
John Wick: Chapter 4 Adds 3 More
The cast for John Wick: Chapter 4 continues to grow. Two new actors have boarded the upcoming sequel while Lance Reddick has been confirmed to be reprising his role as Charon.
Returning director Chad Stahelski confirmed Reddick’s involvement saying:
“Lance has been part of the franchise since the very beginning and has had an integral role in shaping the world of John Wick. I couldn’t be more excited to be working with him again.”
Additionally, Deadline reports that Scott Adkins (IP Man 4, Doctor Strange) and Marko Zaror (Undisputed III: Redemption) have also been cast. Nothing on who Adkins might play, but Zaror would play the villain opposite Keanu Reeves’ John Wick.
John Wick: Chapter 4 hits theaters May 27, 2022.
Babylon Casts Grows
Olivia Wilde, Spike Jonze, Phoebe Tonkin, Tobey Maguire, and Jean Smart have joined the cast for Babylon, the ode to Hollywood’s golden age that Damien Chazelle is directing for Paramount. The four join previously announced actors Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Katherine Waterston, Max Minghella, Lukas Haas, Flea, Rory Scovel, Samara Weaving, Eric Roberts, P.J. Byrne, and Damon Gupton.
Character details are being kept locked tight, and it is unclear whether Wilde, Jonze, Tonkin and Maguire are playing fictional or historical characters. The film is set in the late 1920s during the movie industry’s transition from silent films to talkies. The project has been previously described as “The Great Gatsby on steroids.”
The film will have a limited release on December 25, 2022, before going wide January 6, 2023.
John Lithgow Back for Dexter Revival
John Lithgow is reported to have joined the cast of Showtime‘s upcoming Dexter revival. Lithgow played Arthur Mitchell a.k.a. the “Trinity Killer” in the show’s fourth season and will reportedly “make a short but decisive appearance” in the new season, Deadline reports.
Details are scarce, but the best bet is Lithgow will appear in a flashback or hallucination. For his performance, Lithgow won an Emmy Award back in 2010.
Knives Out 2 Casting Additions
Knives Out 2 is currently filming in Greece and set photos have perhaps confirmed that two more actors have joined the cast. Ethan Hawke and Jada Pinkett Smith were spotted with the rest of the cast of the upcoming Benoit Blanc mystery sequel. No word yet on who either might be playing.
Ron Perlman to Voice Optimus Primal
Ron Perlman is set to voice Optimus Primal in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the next instalment in the live-action Transformers film series. Optimus Primal is, of course, a big robot ape and “the greatest Cybertronian hero who has ever lived.” Perlman previously voiced Optimus Primal in the animated series Transformers: Power of the Primes.
Dolph Lundgren & Frank Grillo to Star in Operation Seawolf
Dolph Lundgren and Frank Grillo are set to star in Operation Seawolf, an upcoming war movie “set in the last days of WWII when Germany, desperate for any remaining opportunity to defeat the Allied powers, looked to their last remaining U-Boats for one final mission: to cruise all the way to New York City and attack the U.S. mainland.”
Steven Luke will direct. Shout! Studios acquired the North America rights to Operation Seawolf, with a release date set for 2022.
