Last Week(s) in Casting: ‘The Adam Project’, ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’, ‘Peacemaker’, Black Friday’ & More

There’s a lot of breaking news in Hollywood happening every minute. In the age of the blockbuster, it’s easy for some smaller movie and television news to slip through the crack. Last Week in Hollywood is our new weekly series highlighting all the interesting news from the last week that we thought didn’t warrant its own post, but was still worth mentioning. It’s less personal opinions and more a hearty roundup of what you might have missed.

The Adam Project Adds Four More

The Adam Project has cast four more actors. Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldana, Mark Ruffalo, and Catherine Keener have joined lead Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming Netflix time travel movie. (By the way, the image above is the first look at the film.)

Garner is playing Reynolds’s 13-year-old self’s mother while Saldana will play the character’s wife, a fighter pilot, in the present day. Ruffalo will play Reynolds’ character’s father, and Keener has been cast as the film’s villain.

The Adam Project is the newest film from Shawn Levy, and follows “a man who travels back in time to get help from his 13-year-old self. Together, they have to find their late father, who is now the same age as Reynolds, and set things right in order to save the future.”

Star Lord is Back For Thor: Love & Thunder

It looks like Star Lord will be dancing his way into a MCU movie before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Chris Pratt has joined the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder. Pratt joins returning players Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, as well as Marvel newcomer Christian Bale, who is reportedly playing the film’s villain.

Apparently, Thor 4 will feel like Avengers 5, says a THR report. Additionally, Thor 4 will begin shooting in January 2021. Ant-Man 3 will begin in the middle of 2021, and GotG Vol. 3 will start at the end of 2021.

Peacemaker Cast Grows

Peacemaker, the forthcoming DCEU HBO Max series from James Gunn, has added a few more cast members.

Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Jennifer Holland (Brightburn), and Chris Conrad (Patriot) have all joined the project. They join John Cena and Steve Agee, who are reprising their The Suicide Squad characters Peacemaker and John Economos.

Brooks will star as Leota Adebayo, and Patrick will portray someone named Auggie Smith. Holland will be reprising her role of Emilia Harcourt from The Suicide Squad film. Finally, Conrad will play Vigilante/Adrian Chase, a former district attorney whose family is murdered and who dons a costume to punish criminals that the justice system let slip through the cracks. Adrian Chase previously appeared on the later seasons of Arrow, so I’m interested in seeing Gunn’s take.

Jamie Foxx Set to Star in The Burial

Jamie Foxx (Law Abiding Citizen) is set to both produce and star in The Burial, a legal drama from Amazon Studios. Maggie Betts (Novitiate) will direct from a script written by Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright (Quill). The film will be based on a true story. The plotline reads: “After a bankrupt funeral home owner decides to sue a rival businessman over a handshake deal gone wrong, the owner hires a flamboyant attorney to handle the case.”

Apparently the film will be a “two-handed drama” and that Foxx will star “opposite a legendary role currently being cast.”

Millie Bobby Brown Will Be a Damsel

Millie Bobby Brown has set up a new project with Netflix. Brown will star in and executive produce Damsel, an upcoming fantasy flick from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Deadline reports “Brown will play Princess Elodie, who thinks she is marrying Prince Henry, only to find out that she is being sacrificed to a dragon.” Collider adds: “the story follows a young princess who is married off to a rival kingdom and immediately finds herself in danger when it’s revealed that her new home has a nasty little secret — during the harvest season, the kingdom sacrifices their princesses to a hungry dragon,” and that Brown “will play Princess Elodi, whose innocence gives way to a fierce warrior spirit when she finds herself fighting a dragon that’s out to kill her.”

This is Brown’s second feature with Netflix. She recently starred in and produced Enola Holmes. And of course, Netflix also gave her her big break with Stranger Things. So it definitely makes sense that both Brown and Netflix are eager to stick together. Stranger Things season 4 is still in production, and beyond Netflix, Brown will next appear Godzilla vs. Kong, the sequel to Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which was Brown’s feature debut.

Sylvester Stallone Joins The Suicide Squad

James Gunn has revealed that Sylvester Stallone has joined The Suicide Squad in an undisclosed role. Gunn confirmed the news on his Instagram with the statement: “Always love working with my friend Sylvester Stallone and our work today on #TheSuicideSquad was no exception. Despite Sly being an iconic movie star, most people still don’t have any idea what an amazing actor this guy is.”

So who could Stallone be playing? Well, apparently Steve Agee is only playing King Shark on-set as the physical stand-in. That means that Stallone could be voicing King Shark, which would honestly be awesome. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Bruce Campbell Joins Horror Movie Black Friday

Bruce Campbell has joined Black Friday, an upcoming horror movie set on the day store employees dread. The film will “center on unhappy toy store employees forced to fight against shoppers on the busiest commerce day of the year when an alien parasite causes the shoppers to become murderous.”

In addition to Campbell, the film will also star Devon Sawa, Michael Jai White, Ivana Baquero, Stephen Peck, and Ryan Lee.

Stranger Things Season 4 New Cast Members

Stranger Things has announced its new cast members for its upcoming fourth season. Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) will recur alongside new series regulars Jamie Campbell Bower (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) and Eduardo Franco (Booksmart).

Englund will play Victor Creel, “a disturbed and intimidating man who is imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital for a gruesome murder in the 1950s”; Bower will play Peter Ballard, “a caring man who works as an orderly at a psychiatric hospital who becomes tired of witnessing the hospital’s brutality every day”; Franco will play Argyle, Jonathan’s (Charlie Heaton) new best friend who is “a fun-loving stoner who proudly delivers delicious pizza pies for Surfer Boy Pizza”; and Joseph Quinn (Catherine the Great) as Eddie Munson, the head of The Hellfire Club, Hawkins’ official D&D club.

Other recurring characters in season 4 are Game of Thrones alum Tom Wlaschiha (Mr. Jaqen H’ghar himself), Sherman Augustus (Westworld), Mason Dye (Bosch,), and Nikola Djuricko (Genius, In The Land of Blood and Honey).

Stranger Things season 4 hits Netflix in 2021.

Sam Rockwell, Saorise Ronan Will Solve a Murder Mystery

Sam Rockwell (Jojo Rabbit, Seven Psychopaths), Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Little Women), and David Oyelowo (Selma, Interstellar) have signed on to star in an untitled murder mystery set in the 1950s, with Rockwell and Ronan playing partners trying to solve the crime. No word on who Oyelowo might play.

Searchlight Pictures is behind the project. The story is set in “1950s London, a desperate Hollywood film producer sets out to turn a popular West End play into a film. When members of the production are murdered, world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Rockwell) and overzealous rookie Constable Stalker (Ronan) find themselves in the midst of a puzzling whodunit within London’s glamorous Theatreland and sordid underground.”

The film will be directed by Tom George. Mark Chappell wrote the script.

Black Panther 2 Casts One of Its Antagonists

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog reports that Black Panther 2 will begin shooting in Atlanta in July 2021. Additionally, Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta (Sin Nombre, Spectre) has been cast in a key role. THR states he will be playing one of the main antagonists. How he will factor into the plot is unknown at the stage. We’ll keep you posted.

Neil Patrick Harris Joins New Nicolas Cage Movie

Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) has joined the cast of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, the upcoming film where Nicolas Cage stars as a heightened version of himself. Harris joins previously announced cast members Tiffany Haddish, Pedro Pascal, and Sharon Horgan.

Here’s new plot details for the film: “Cage portrays a version of himself desperate to get a role in a new Tarantino movie while also struggling with a strained relationship with his teenage daughter. As he makes his way through life, he also talks to an egotistical version of himself from the ’90s who railroads him for making bad movies and not being the same star he was at the time, now dealing with a mountain of death and making an appearance at the birthday party of a Mexican billionaire that is a huge fan.”

But wait, apparently Hadish plays Vivian, “an eccentric rogue government agent in a long-standing battle against one of the largest criminal organizations in Europe, who forces superstar Nicolas Cage to go undercover in a crazy, offbook, last ditch effort to bring them down for good.” Harris will play Cage’s talent agent.

It’s not over though. It continues: “While bonding with the man, who hopes to show Cage a script he’s been working on, the actor learns from the CIA that the billionaire is actually a drug cartel kingpin who has kidnapped the daughter of a presidential nominee and is recruited to get intelligence. The predicament gets worse when the billionaire brings Cage’s daughter and ex-wife for a reconciliation and he must take on the role of a lifetime to save their lives.”

Joaquin Phoenix in Talks to Star in Beau is Afraid

Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to star in Ari Aster’s upcoming film Beau is Afraid. The film is being described as “a surrealist horror film set in an alternate present.” If Joaquin Phoenix signs on, he will play the lead role of Beau, “an extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother, their relationship is affected from the fact that he never knew his father.”

The film’s synopsis reads: “An anxious man (Joaquin Phoenix) learns of the death of his mother under mysterious circumstances and upon traveling home makes an alarming discovery about his past. During his journey, he runs into various crazy supernatural threats.”

Willow Series Casts Three Actresses

Deadline reports that the Willow series has cast three young actresses in lead roles. Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals) will play Dove, a humble kitchen maid who proves herself on a quest. Meanwhile, Cailee Spaeny (The Craft: Legacy) will play Kit, a princess whose twin brother’s abduction sparks the central quest of the series. Finally, Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story) will star as Jade, a servant who’s Kit’s best friend and perhaps the greatest warrior in the Willowverse.

Peter Dinklage to Lead Toxic Avenger Reboot

Peter Dinklage (Elf) has been cast in the reboot of The Toxic Avenger. The original 1984 film was a box office bomb that went on to become a cult classic , spawning multiple sequels. The film tells the “story of Melvin Ferd, a lonely janitor, who is exposed to toxic chemicals and then becomes a mutant superhero.” The reboot will be directed and written by Macon Blair.
