A Magic: The Gathering movie is finally happening, after over a decade of starts and stops.
According to Deadline, Maya Hawke has joined Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment’s upcoming live-action film based on the Hasbro franchise. While the movie’s cast is expected to have an ensemble feel, Hawke’s undisclosed role is said to be a “key one.”
Hawke is best known for her role in the final three seasons of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Her other credits include Inside Out 2, Do Revenge, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Maestro. She will be seen next in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
Matt Johnson is directing Magic: The Gathering. He will also write the screenplay alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. The movie is envisioned as the first entry in a live-action Magic: The Gathering film and TV universe. It will not be tied to Netflix’s upcoming animated series that has Terry Matalas as showrunner and the Russo Brothers on board as producers.
Magic: The Gathering launched in 1993 as a trading card game. In the 30+ years since, it has grown into a global phenomenon, with an expanding ecosystem of entry points that now spans streaming, digital games, publishing, consumer products, live events and IP crossovers.
Set across a multiverse of fantasy worlds, the game’s rich mythology continues to evolve through its card sets, novels, and crossover collaborations with iconic franchises including Final Fantasy, Marvel, Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons, and The Lord of the Rings.
