Wonder Man is finally entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to Variety, Andrew Guest has been hired to serve as head writer and executive producer on a Wonder Man series, which Destin Daniel Cretton is developing at Disney+.
Wonder Man will focus on the Marvel hero, whose real name is Simon Williams. Williams is “the son of a wealthy industrialist whose company falls on hard times due to competition from Tony Stark’s Stark Industries. As a result, Williams accepts an offer from villain Baron Zemo that gives him ionic superpowers including super strength and durability.” The character has been depicted as both an enemy and ally of the Avengers.
For the unfamiliar, Wonder Man was actually set to make his MCU debut back in 2017. Nathan Fillion was cast and even shot footage as Simon Williams for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but unfortunately, his scenes were cut from the final film. Will Fillion reprise his role as Simon Williams/Wonder Man for the upcoming series or will Marvel go in a new casting direction? Time will tell.
Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will executive produce and maybe direct Wonder Man. The upcoming Disney+ series is part of an overall deal with Marvel Studios, which was announced at the same time Marvel confirmed Cretton would return to direct and write Shang-Chi 2.
Wonder Man joins a list of MCU shows that are currently in development, including Daredevil, Agatha: House of Harkness, and Loki Season 2.
We’ll keep you posted as more information on the series (including who will play the titular hero) gets announced. I would expect Marvel Studios to officially announce the project at its D23 presentation later this year.
