In today’s Marvel Cinematic Universe update on all the television properties currently in development for Disney+:
- Casting for Loki
- Release dates for WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
- When Ms. Marvel starts filming
- Character details for Hawkeye
Let’s jump right in!
Wow! ComicBook is reporting that Owen Wilson has been cast in a major role for Loki (Variety later confirmed the reports). His character is currently under wraps. While some are pointing out that this means he is playing a known comic book character, I have a different theory. I think he is playing an agent of the Time Variance Authority. So are Loki and Wilson going to be buddy cops?
Meanwhile, The lluminerdi states Loki will introduce the first transgender character into the MCU. A casting call has been released for a character named Sera. She is a member of the Anchorites, a group of wingless angels enslaved by mistresses and taught magic in order to secure an afterlife for the women they served. While the Anchorites are all male Angels of Heven, Sera identifies as a female.
Reportedly, Marvel and Disney executives are looking for a transgender actor between the ages of 20 and 40 to play the role. Sera is said to play a “major supporting” role in season 1, with options for season 2. The character may also end up appearing in future films.
UPDATE: Deadline reports that Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Doctor Who) has joined the series in an as-yet unannounced role. However, she will reportedly play “a prominent character.” Could it be Sera?
Mark the Date: WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
In a company earnings call for The Walt Disney Company, CEO Bob Iger revealed when WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be premiering.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is coming in August. WandaVision arrives in December. The second season of The Mandalorian will release between them in October.
The Illuminerdi also has the details on when Ms. Marvel will start filming. Apparently, the first season of Ms. Marvel will shoot between July 2020 and June 2021, with filming set to start in August. They also speculate that since Captain Marvel 2 will be filming around that same time, that Ms. Marvel could make an appearance in that film. Disney and Marvel love corporate synergy, so I could see that happening.
Hawkeye is the one MCU series that I want to see go for six seasons and a movie. I am beyond excited to see Clint Barton explored further. MCUCosmic have heard from a “very reliable source” stating that the series will introduce Trickshot and the Tracksuit Mafia. Here’s the excerpt:
The series will introduce Clint’s brother Barney Barton. Comic fans will know him as the anti-hero Trickshot. This is interesting as Trickshot was also a member of the Dark Avengers, potentially setting up someone who can be in the Thunderbolts project Marvel is developing.
Oh, heck yeah! Hawkeye definitely looks to be setting up the next generation of archers to replace Clint should star Jeremy Renner retire the character. I would be 100% on board with Trickshot leading a version of the Thunderbolts. Let’s make this happen, Marvel!
