Is Glen Powell going from one “Danger Zone” to another?
Following a report from The InSneider that claimed that Tom Cruise wants his Top Gun: Maverick co-star to succeed him as the new face of the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, ESPN commentator Pat McAfee called up Powell to set the record straight during today’s The Pat McAfee Show.
Per Variety, here’s what Powell had to say about the rumor that he was being eyed as the new lead star of the Mission: Impossible franchise. “My mom would never let me do that,” remarked that actor, before playfully adding that the stunt-filled franchise is the “worst gig in town, everybody knows that. That’s a death trap.”
Powell proceeded to burst into laughter, prompting McAfee to exclaim, “He’s lying!” Whether or not Powell has had talks with Cruise about potentially joining the franchise, he’s certainly not going to spill the details before the time is right. Cruise has seemingly taken a liken to his Maverick co-star, having attended the European premiere of Powell’s Twisters earlier this year. Powell has also shared that Cruise has given him some great advice about succeeding in Hollywood and finding the right roles.
As for Mission: Impossible itself, the franchise is set to return to the big screen next summer with The Final Reckoning, the eighth installment in the series and direct sequel to 2023’s Dead Reckoning. The first trailer for the action movie was released earlier this week, along with the brief synopsis, “Our lives are the sum of our choices.”
The Final Reckoning features returning franchise stars Cruise, Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Angela Bassett, and Henry Czerny, as well as newcomers Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Katy O’Brian, Holt McCallany, Tramell Tillman, and Janet McTeer. Is there room in the movie for a cameo from Powell? I guess we’ll have to watch to find out.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning opens in theaters on May 23, 2025.
Would you be open to Powell succeeding Cruise as the face of Mission: Impossible? Or maybe you’d rather see Paramount return to their original pick, Jeremy Renner?
