Mufasa in the prequel Mufasa: The Lion King

After a successful run in theaters, Mufasa: The Lion King is heading to Disney+.

Per Deadline, the prequel (and partial sequel) to 2019’s The Lion King will arrive on Disney+ on March 26, 2025, exactly 96 days after its theatrical premiere. Unlike most studios that take their films to digital/PVOD within a month of hitting theaters, Disney has held firm on giving its movies a long theatrical window. However, just after three months in theaters, Disney is ready to send the $712.5 million-grossing movie to streaming.

To announce the movie’s imminent arrival on the streaming platform, Disney+ released the following poster:

Directed by Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King uses a framing device to tell the title lion’s origin story, with Rafiki recounting how Mufasa became King of the Pride Lands to his grandaughter, Kiara, the daughter of Simba and Nala.

Aaron Pierre leads the photo-realistically animated movie’s cast as Mufasa, with Kelvin Harris Jr. voicing Taka (a.k.a. Scar in The Lion King). The cast also includes Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Kani as Rafiki, Kagiso Lediga as young Rafiki, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi, Keith David as Masego, Anika Noni Rose as Afia, and Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara.

Mufasa: The Lion King arrives on Disney+ on March 26.
