Neve Campbell has confirmed her return as Sidney Prescott in Scream 8.

Speaking with AP Entertainment (via Instagram), Campbell shared that Scream 8 is one of her upcoming projects, confirming that it’s “in the pipeline” at Spyglass Media and Paramount. “You know I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8,” she said. “[But] I’ll be in it.”

An eighth Scream movie was announced in April 2026. Lilla and Nora Zuckerman are writing the screenplay for the slasher sequel. They are best known for showrunning the hit Peacock series Poker Face. They also worked as writers and co-executive producers on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, and Prodigal Son.

Scream 8 remains without a director at this time. Wes Craven directed the first four, while Radio Silence was brought in for the first two in Scream‘s reboot era. Kevin Williamson, who created the franchise, directed Scream 7.

Campbell’s comments confirm that Scream 7 will once again revolve around Sidney Prescott. The actor has starred in six out of the seven Screams, skipping 2023’s Scream VI due to a pay dispute. She returned to the franchise for Scream 7 following the controversial firing of Melissa Barrera, who had been positioned as Scream‘s new “final girl.”

Is It Time for Scream to Move on From Sidney Prescott?

Campbell’s Scream return was a pretty big deal for the franchise. Scream 7 shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film in the series with $214 million. However, the slasher sequel received the worst critical reception yet for Scream, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 30%. A lot of criticism was thrown at making Sidney the protagonist again, with many believing that there was no more ground left to tread with her and Ghostface.

Unlike Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street, where Jason and Freddy are the draw over the “final girls,” Scream is very dependent on who Ghostface is targeting, since the person under the mask is doing it for personal reasons (that, in the early movies, were largely tied to Sidney’s mom being a homewrecker).

Scream (2022) and Scream VI found a new way in with Barrera’s Sam Carpenter. Unfortunately, with Barrera unlikely to return to Scream anytime soon, the franchise had to give in to Campbell’s salary demands. And I’m happy for Campbell because she deserves to get paid.

But Scream is now stuck with Sidney. A lot of fans found the killers behind Ghostface in Scream 7 to be underwhelming. Scream is nothing without its Ghostface twist, and sadly, the franchise has run out of characters with a good enough reason to want to target Sidney 30+ years after the original movie.

Here’s hoping the Zuckermans breathe new life into Scream (by trimming its legacy characters… seriously, how are Gale and the Meeks-Martin twins still alive?), because another Sidney vs. Ghostface movie just doesn’t seem all that interesting.

Scream 8 remains without a release date.
