‘Pac-Man,’ ‘Garfield,’ ‘Road House’ & More in This ’80s Flashback News Round-up

Back to the 80's

Welcome to our special 80’s edition news round-up! Sometimes Hollywood looks around and is fresh out of ideas, so they love to go back to the well and “freshen up” old properties. With that being said, everyone grab your Swatch Watches while I squeeze into my parachute pants and let’s get going.

Pac-Man Live-Action Film In Development

Deadline is reporting that Bandai Namco Entertainment and Wayfarer Studios are developing a live-action Pac-Man movie. Yes, our favorite orb-chomping yellow guy is making a live-action debut based upon an idea from Lightbeam Entertainment, who brought you Sonic the Hedgehog. We all know how well 80’s themed video games do at the box office (looking at you Mario Bros.)

Garfield Animated Film Adds Cast

According to Deadline, additional casting for the animated Garfield movie has been announced. Added to the Chris Pratt-led film are Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Waddingham, and Cecily Strong.

Samuel L Jackson has previously been announced for the Alcon Entertainment film with Mark Dindal directing. I seriously forgot about this movie and thought they were doing a bio-pic of James Garfield, 20th President of the United States. Who wouldn’t want to see Chris Pratt tackle that?

Garfield is set for a February 16, 2024 release.

Road House Remake Adds More to Cast

Road House

Deadline reports that more actors have joined Amazon Prime Video‘s upcoming remake of the Patrick Swayze classic film Road House. Seriously, sit down for this. The Jake Gyllenhaal-led film has added Joaquim de Almeida, Darren Barnet, Kevin Carroll, and JD Pardo to a cast that also includes (deep breath) Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Arturo Castro, Dominique Columbus, Beau Knapp and Bob Menery.

Joel Silver is producing and Doug Limon directing a script by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. The movie’s official logline reads: “a former UFC fighter (Gyllenhaal) who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.”

You can remake the film, but you can never replace Patrick Swayze’s sweet sweet hair. Road House is currently in production

Physical Renewed for Third Season

TVLine Reports that the Rose Byrne-led series Physical is getting a third season on Apple TV+. The second season has just finished shooting and has yet to premiere.  Ah, an 80’s based “dramedy” about aerobics in Southern California. You people must love Aqua Net laden big hair and leg-warmers!

Ferris Beuller’s Day Off Spinoff

Finally, Variety is reporting a Ferris Beuller’s Day Off spin-off is in the works at Paramount. Titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off, the film will follow the previously unnamed valets who took Cameron’s father’s red Ferrari for a spin around Chicago. Just typing that gives makes me feel dirty. On the bright side, Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwtiz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are set to produce with Cobra Kai writer Bill Posley writing the screenplay. No director is set. I think some things are better left untouched.

To quote a famous time-traveling movie from the ’80s, “It’s time to go back… to the future!”

I’ll need a little help getting out of my parachute pants. Who would have thought I could fit into 35-year-old clothes? Haha, not me. Seriously, I can’t feel my toes.

So give me your thoughts. Pac-Man, Garfield, Road House, Physical, and Sam & Victor’s Day Off; bad ideas or terrible ideas? Comment below!
