Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster are ready to move ahead with the next Saw movie.
In a post on X, the Saw franchise revealed that Mike P. Nelson, the filmmaker behind Lionsgate’s upcoming horror film Beware Boiúna, will be directing the next installment in the long-running horror series.
Franchise co-creator James Wan is producing. Gregory Weidman & Geoff Tock (Dune: Prophecy) are writing the untitled Saw 11.
“It speaks volumes that James Wan is passionate about returning to this franchise, and his belief in Mike evokes his own breakthrough with the original Saw,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture chair Adam Fogelson. “Mike is one of the promising voices shaping the next generation of horror. He has a singular vision for this film, and we’re incredibly confident in what he’ll deliver.”
Added Wan:
“Making the original Saw was a defining experience for me, so it was essential to find a director who would honor that world. Mike has a raw, distinctive filmmaking voice with an inventive approach to the genre, and I believe he’ll bring something truly unique and special to the franchise.”
Nelson’s past directorial credits include the new Silent Night, Deadly Night, Wrong Turn, and the opening “No Wake” segment of V/H/S 85. “Being asked to play in this twisted sandbox with James is nothing short of a dream come true,” Nelson said in a statement via Deadline. “Greg and Geoff and James have crafted such a wild script that brings the mystery of the original while exploring new insane bloody ideas that meld so well with the brutal moral compass of the franchise. Let the games begin!”
Saw is one of the few horror franchises to have 10 films that are all part of a single continuous mythology. It’s unclear where exactly Saw 11 will fall. Is a hard remake on the way or merely a soft reboot that will honor what came before it? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
