1408 is set to become the latest Stephen King adaptation to go beyond the source material.

According to Variety, Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things) and Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) are set to join original cast members Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack in a sequel to the 2007 supernatural horror film 1408 (a.k.a. the 20th greatest King adaptation of all time).

Cusack and Jackson are currently negotiating the terms of their return. They will reprise their roles as author Michael Enslin, who in the first movie, as part of his new book on haunted hotels, investigates legends of mysterious and violent deaths behind door 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, and Gerald Olin, the Dolphin Hotel’s manager, respectively.

The original movie was based on King’s 1999 short story of the same name. Plot details for the sequel have not been disclosed, although Cusack’s Michael Enslin and Jackson’s Gerald Olin are said to be secondary characters, with Dyer set to be the lead. Wood will appear in a supporting role.

Mikael Håfström, who directed the first film, returns to the director’s chair for the sequel. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Verheiden. Production is currently slated to begin in early 2027.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Bluestone Entertainment’s Richard Saperstein, Spyglass Media Group, and Frank Mayor serve as producers. Bluestone Entertainment and FilmNation Entertainment are co-financing.

1408 was quite the box office hit back in 2007, grossing $132 million worldwide against a $25 million budget. While a sequel was never expected, given that King never wrote a sequel to his short story, Cusack did tell People in 2025 that it’s the “one [sequel] that I think would be interesting to do.”
