Sydney Sweeney to Star in New ‘Barbarella’ Movie

An old classic is about to get a major facelift.

Deadline has reported that Sydney Sweeney will star in and executive produce a new Barbarella movie for Sony Pictures. The actor herself confirmed the news in an Instagram post that read, “[T]ime to save the universe.”

Barbarella, based on Jean-Claude Forest’s French comic book series, was previously adapted into a 1968 movie starring Jane Fonda. The new film is still in the early stages of development with no writer or director attached at this time.

Since there’s no writer yet, there’s no idea which direction this upcoming film will take. However, the 1969 film followed “an astronaut from the 41st century who sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy.”

Sweeney is becoming quite popular with Sony. The actor, who shot to fame on the HBO drama series Euphoria, is also starring in the studio’s Marvel film Madame Web opposite Dakota Johnson. Sony also recently acquired The Registration, which has Sweeney on board to produce and star.

We’ll keep you posted on Barbarella as more information becomes available.
