Directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay he co-wrote with Bob Gale, Back to the Future follows Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), a teenager from 1985, as he is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean built by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), where he inadvertently prevents his future parents from falling in love – threatening his own existence – and is forced to reconcile them and somehow get back to the future.
Back to the Future was released on July 3, 1985, by Universal Pictures. The sci-fi movie earned over $381 million, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1985 worldwide. It won an Academy Award, three Saturn Awards, and a Hugo Award. The movie’s theme song, “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News, was also a success.
