‘The Adventures of Tintin’ Gets the Best Sequel Update in Years From Peter Jackson

Reading Time: 2 minutes

After 15 long years, it looks like The Adventures of Tintin 2 is finally happening. Peter Jackson gave an extremely promising update on the long-gestating animated sequel earlier this week during his Cannes Film Festival Rendezvous.

Per Screen Daily, Jackson confirmed that he has been working on the script for the sequel with his partner Fran Walsh. “I’ve been working with Fran on another Tintin script. I was writing it in the hotel room here. It’s an active real thing, and I’m getting back into the Tintin world, and I actually love it,” he told those in attendance.

Jackson and Steven Spielberg famously made a pact years ago for the Tintin movies. Spielberg would direct the Jackson-produced first film, and then they would swap places for the sequel, with Jackson directing and Spielberg producing.

“The deal was that Steven directs one and I direct another. Steven did his film, then for 15 years [later] I haven’t made mine. I feel very awkward about that,” Jackson admitted.

Tintin Fans Have Waited 15 Years for the Sequel

Released in 2011, The Adventures of Tintin was based on three volumes from Hergé’s Tintin comic book series — The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure. In the animated adventure film, Tintin, Snowy, and Captain Haddock search for the treasure of the Unicorn, but face dangerous pursuit by the villainous Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine.

The animated movie was made with motion-capture technology, with Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, and Daniel Craig, among others, acting out the scenes on set in addition to voicing their characters.

It’s a shame that it has taken 15 years for a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin to seem finally on the verge of happening, considering that the 2011 film was a critical and commercial success. ScreenAge Wasteland is certainly fond of the flick, as it made both our 100 Greatest Animated Films and 100 Hidden Gems of the 2010s lists.

I blame Jackson for the delay, since he got busy with The Hobbit trilogy. Though, to be fair, Anthony Horowitz’s original sequel script was reportedly scrapped by 2016, so maybe it’s just taken a while for everyone to find the right story to tell.

We will definitely keep you posted as (hopefully) more updates are shared for Tintin 2.
