‘The Outsider’ Trailer: Ben Mendelsohn Investigates an Unexplainable Murder in New HBO Series

HBO has finally released a trailer for their upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Outsider.

The Outsider stars Ben Mendelsohn as Ralph Anderson, a detective investigating the gruesome murder of an 11-year-old boy. It seems like an open and shut case, complete with DNA and fingerprints, but then Anderson discovers the prime suspect (Jason Bateman) has an airtight alibi – multiple alibis in fact – that place him out of town when the crime happened. So who actually murdered the boy? Can someone truly be in two places at once? Will Anderson find the answers to explain the unexplainable?

Having read The Outsider, I can say that whoever watches this series is in for quite a ride, because nothing is as it seems. I’m also excited to see Holly Gibney (played by Cynthia Erivo in this adaptation) on screen, as I haven’t watched the Mr. Mercedes series, but I did love her character in the book trilogy.

King adaptations are always so hit and miss (usually miss), but this captivating trailer gives The Outsider a gritty, dark feel that understandably lends itself to comparisons of True Detective. I loved the book, and the trailer alone has given me a lot of hope that the 10 episode series is going to deliver while staying true to the source material.

Official plot synopsis from HBO:

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel of the same name, The Outsider begins with a seemingly straightforward investigation into the gruesome murder of a young boy. But when an insidious supernatural force edges its way into the case, it leads a seasoned cop and an unorthodox investigator to question everything they believe in.

The Outsider premieres on HBO on January 12, 2020.
