There’s precious few horror-themed Westerns out there but it looks like The Pale Door which is currently filming in Oklahoma may scratch that itch.
Devin Druid of 13 Reasons Why will join the cast which includes Stan Shaw, Bill Sage, Tina Parker, Natasha Bassett, Pat Healy and James Whitecloud.
Helmed by Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura) and cowritten by Koontz, his Obscura collaborator Cameron Burns and Keith Lansdale, the film will centre on a group of bandits, who after a botched train robbery escape to a nearby ghost town which is unexpectedly populated by a coven of witches.
Koontz said in an interview with Deadline:
“I love the idea of mixing these two disparate worlds of horror and western, and to do so with the help of Joe and Keith Lansdale, feels like the perfect devil’s playground. It’s 3:10 To Yuma meets The Descent, but doused, and then set on fire with psychological horror. Once this gets going, it’s relentless.”
The Paper Street Pictures production has no release date as yet, but as always, we’ll keep you posted.
So I don’t know about you, but I adore me some horror themed Western stories; the PB&J of sub-genres can’t get enough releases and this setup sounds pretty exciting. The Killing Box (AKA Grey Knight AKA Ghost Brigade AKA Lost Brigade) introduced the idea for me but I can’t think of many others, other than the occasional cannibal yarn like the excellent Ravenous and Bone Tomahawk.
