MOVIES WATCHED THIS WEEK

The Proposition (2005)

“A lawman apprehends a notorious outlaw and gives him nine days to kill his older brother, or else they’ll execute his younger brother.”

Read Double Impact’s thoughts here.

Mulholland Falls (1996)

“In 1950’s Los Angeles, a special crime squad of the LAPD investigates the murder of a young woman.”

A neo-noir that has some good but also misses the mark on being memorable. The biggest disappointment is that there is a fantastic B cast here (Griffith, Palmentari, Chris Penn, Micahel Madsen, Malkovich, and a quick scene from a young Kyle Chandler) and they feel underutilized but angry and tough guy Nick Nolte is always a win. This is still a fun movie if you like the noir feel. (3.25/5)

Solaris (1972)

“A psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.”

I’m not going to go too in-depth here because this may pop up on a certain list that we are currently posting but Tarkovsky continues to be one of my favorite directors as I keep digging into his filmography. This is a strange and almost snail-paced space exploration film that is completely absorbing. His images never cease to slap me in the face. (4.5/5)

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)

“A teenage boy is haunted in his dreams by deceased child murderer Freddy Krueger, who is out to possess him in order to continue his reign of terror in the real world.”

This entry has always entertained me. I don’t understand the hate it gets. Outside of them not using Englund for part of the movie, Freddy is scarier here than in later installments. Decent kills, effects, homosexual undertones … What’s not to love? (3.25/5)
