Weekend Fallout: I Didn’t Choose the Wasteland Life, the Wasteland Life Chose Me

The Weekend Fallout is an unsafe place to discuss most things in the reel and real world.

Let us know what you have been watching recently on the big and small screen. Excited about any upcoming releases? Doing anything fun this weekend? Simply sitting around in your underwear eating dang quesadillas while watching movies and endlessly scrolling through social media? Let us know below!

Here are some articles from this past week that we encourage you to check out and jump in (or start) the conversation.

We have a winner of our 1st annual Movie Madness tournament where we decided the best movie of the 2010s. After you check it out, make sure to vote in our poll for next year’s theme. The poll is located in the sidebar on desktop and toward the bottom of pages on mobile.

Since there aren’t any new releases during this time, we modified our That Pairs Nicely to help give you some genre suggestions to watch during the quarantine. Check out our suggestion for Animated and Time Travel films.

Double Impact! Presents ‘Tron’ and we are confused. Can you help explain it to us?

We have plenty of ways to get engaged in some fun discussions here at SAW. Check out some of our Question of the Day and Down the Tubes posts.

MOVIES WATCHED THIS WEEK

Little Women (2019)

“Jo March reflects back and forth on her life, telling the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women, each determined to live life on her own terms.”

I was pleasantly entertained by this. Greta Gerwig did a nice job of being able to tell a period tale that felt modern at the same time. I appreciate how she is able to give us solid and distinctive characters that felt like individuals but also feeling like real sisters. Florence Pugh was the standout to me with Saoirse Ronan turning a solid lead performance. I think it was a little long-winded but I don’t know what I would have cut. The jumping back forth felt jumbled at times. Some developed the characters just fine, there were just too many of them for my tastes. After a while, it just feels like a gimmick. I think less would have been more here. For me, it’s what keeps it held back from being a truly standout movie for years to comes. (4.24/5)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

“An introvert freshman is taken under the wings of two seniors who welcome him to the real world.”

I was pretty surprised by how much I really enjoyed this and how good it is. Great characters and story that has the normal coming of age cliches but ends up going much deeper than I was expecting. It dealt with real issues and problems that most of these movies end up barely scratching the surface. This was the first movie where I enjoyed Emma Watson’s performance and Ezra Miller was his typical solid self. Great soundtrack and I definitely appreciated the Rocky Horror Picture Show love. (4.5/5)

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

“A national manhunt is ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.”

I was a little concerned going into this because I wasn’t a fan of Julian Dennison in Deadpool 2. However, his schtick worked great here. As “annoying” as he was, he was endearing and Sam Neill did Sam Neill things. Felt almost like a parody at times with how all the characters were and certain happenings, but it was a fun adventure that was heart-warming and filled with some laughs. (4/5)

 The Wrestler (2008)

“A faded professional wrestler must retire, but finds his quest for a new life outside the ring a dispiriting struggle.”

I love this damn movie and I think Mickey Rourke’s performance is an all-time great. The scene where he is talking with his daughter about how he just doesn’t want her to hate him kills me every time. His delivery and the documentary way it was shot, just put it over the top. Marissa Tomei is fantastic any time she is on screen. This is an incredible story of a broken man regardless if you’re a fan of wrestling or not. One of Aronofksy’s best. (4.75/5)

Vote for this week’s random Monsoonvision where we will watch the movie with the most votes this Wednesday, April 22nd at 9pm CST.
