Will Poulter Cast as Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Will Poulter has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Midsommar and We’re the Millers actor has been cast as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film, written and directed by James Gunn, is set to start shooting before the end of this year.

Gunn confirmed the casting on Twitter. He wrote “Welcome to the Guardians family, Will Poulter. He’s an amazing actor and wonderful guy. See you in a couple weeks.”

I like Poulter as an actor, but I’ve really only seen him in comedic roles like We’re the Millers. I’ll definitely have to check out some of his more dramatic work, but in Gunn we trust. Now we just sit back and wait for set photos to tell us how massively in shape Poulter got for the role.

As Variety noted, the comics mostly tied Adam Warlock with the Infinity Stones, but with those out of the equation, it’s unclear how Warlock will be used in the MCU. Variety hinted that Warlock’s film storyline might focus on his “transformation into the Magus, an insane and dangerously powerful creature — which brought the Guardians of the Galaxy into the orbit of Kang the Conqueror.”

Jonathan Majors has already been cast as Kang for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and appeared on Loki as a Kang variant. Kang is clearly being set up as a potential Thanos-level big bad, so I could see Marvel adapting that part of his history for the MCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
