Will Smith has finally found his Bad Boys: Ride or Die follow-up project.
According to Deadline, the actor has signed on to star in the action thriller Supermax, which will be directed by David Gordon Green. The movie will follow two FBI agents investigating a murder that has taken place in the world’s most secure prison. David Weil and David J. Rosen wrote the screenplay.
Smith will play one of the FBI agents, with casting currently underway to find his female partner. Amazon MGM Studios acquired worldwide rights to the movie this week for around $70 million.
A theatrical release is not planned, with the expectation being that this will release straight to streaming on Prime Video. Production on Supermax is slated to begin mid-August.
Will Smith Plots Major Acting Comeback
Supermax should be the first of many new movies starring Smith that audiences should see hit theaters or streaming over the next few years. As part of a first-look, multi-picture deal with Paramount, Smith is set to star in an adaptation of Chuck Hogan’s book Devils in Exile. Titled Sugar Bandits for the screen, the movie will follow a former Special Forces soldier who runs an elite vigilante squad working to wipe out the drug trade in Boston.
Rabbit Hole is another movie in the works at Paramount. Plot details remain unknown, although Jon Spaihts is scripting the feature.
Smith also has the action movie Fast and Loose in development at Netflix. The actor will play “a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memories. As he pieces together his past, he learns he’s been living two lives: one as a crime kingpin and the other as an undercover CIA agent,” per the logline.
There’s also that I Am Legend sequel with Michael B. Jordan that Steven Caple Jr. will direct for Warner Bros., as well as a possible fifth Men in Black movie at Sony.
