Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in GoldenEye

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan has revealed what he thinks of Amazon MGM Studios buying out Eon producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for creative control of the long-running spy franchise.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Brosnan said that the deal — believed to be to the tune of $1 billion — was “the right decision for Barbara and Michael.” He stated”

“It takes great courage for them to let go. They will still have a say in matters. I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.”

“History has been passed on and I’m very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond and the movies that I made with Barbara and Michael. That we moved the needle, that we brought it back to life. It had been dormant [for] six years and GoldenEye was such a success that it continued and went from strength to strength. … You know, everything changes, everything falls apart, and I wish them well.”

When Did Pierce Brosnan Play Bond?

Brosnan led the Bond franchise as its titular 007 from 1995 to 2002, appearing in four movies: GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002). His tenure as Bond was the first to be overseen by Wilson and Broccoli. The duo went on to oversee Daniel Craig’s five-film run as the spy, which ended in 2021 with No Time to Die.

The untitled Bond 26 remains shrouded in mystery ever since Amazon took over creative control. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has already asked his social media followers who should play 007 in the next movie, much to the absolute horror of the fandom. Brosnan hopes that it is a “given” that the character will remain British. The Daily Mail newspaper recently reported that an internal memo was circulated at Amazon “stipulating the spy will not change gender or nationality.” I guess time will tell.

Do you think Amazon will destroy James Bond or is the franchise in good hands?
