Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) is set to direct Blue Beetle for Warner Bros. and DC Films.
The upcoming film will focus on the third individual to take on the mantle, Jaime Reyes, a Mexican-American teenager who becomes the Blue Beetle after an alien scarab fuses with him and provides him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor. The armor can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings and shields.
In a statement to TheWrap, Soto said:
“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC. I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”
Blue Beetle is an interesting addition to the DC Extended Universe. In the comics, the character has been a member of the Teen Titans and Justice League International, and was also mentored by Peacemaker. John Cena is playing Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad meaning the two could cross paths at some point in the future. That would be sort of cool.
It is unknown if the upcoming film is related to the rumored HBO Max series that made the rounds online at the start of 2020. It seems unlikely, but who knows what is going on over at DC.
Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) has been hired to write the screenplay. Production on the film is hoping to begin this Fall.
