Everyone is patiently waiting to hear more details on James Gunn‘s upcoming DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad. Fans almost jumped for joy when last week rumors swirled that long time Gunn regular Michael Rooker had been cast as King Shark in the film. Rooker later denied the casting allegations.
Now a new casting rumor has emerged. According to Geeks Worldwide, Academy Award winning actor Benicio Del Toro is in talks to be cast as The Mayor, an “irascible old warrior who lives for war.” He is presumed to be the main villain in the film. Del Toro previously worked with Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney are all set to reprise their roles from 2016’s Suicide Squad. Idris Elba is the only confirmed new cast member. His role remains unknown, although a lot of the internet pegs him to be playing Bronze Tiger.
As for which character I think “The Mayor” could be code for? Well, an “old warrior who lives for war” could easily be construed as Vandal Savage, an immortal caveman who has raged crime and violence on Earth for centuries. DC fans only know that Savage is ripe for a proper adaptation after the botched attempt on The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow.
The Suicide Squad hits theaters August 6, 2021.
