Ryan Reynolds’ new sci-fi comedy Free Guy is currently filming in Boston when a cast photo appeared via 20th Century Fox showing cast members (from left to right) Joe Keery, Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Free Guy director Shawn Levy, Taika Waititi and Utkarsh Ambudkar.
According to Deadline, the film will be
in the vein of The Truman Show, where a bank teller stuck in his routine discovers he’s a background character in a rather brutal open world, action-adventure video game and he is the only one capable of saving his world
Levy, who is perhaps best known for his directorial duties in the Night at the Museum franchise as well as Stranger Things is also announced to helm the Starman reboot; Reynolds meanwhile is still hot off his high grossing film Pokémon Detective Pikachu and has 6 other projects either announced or in production; this includes several reprisals of his Deadpool persona and a sequel to The Hitman’s Bodyguard.
Despite finding near universal appeal behind the director’s chair (he’s bringing us a Time Bandits TV show…) Taika Waititi is still consistently playing secondary character roles in major productions including Avengers: Endgame and the upcoming Star Wars TV show, The Mandelorian.
Ambudkar has just finished his part in the live action filming of Disney’s Mulan while Keery of Stranger Things fame and Comer from Killing Eve are themselves heading into big budget filmmaking with this entry.
Free Guy is slated for release on the 3rd of July 2020.
So, who’d be interested in a live action Wreck It Ralph (or Pixels, if you want to go there…)/Truman Show mashup starring Reynolds? The casting seems incredibly on-point with Reynolds and Waititi likely going together like PB&J and the premise sounds about as fun as a movie could possibly be.
