‘Captain Marvel 2’ Officially in the Works with ‘WandaVision’ Writer

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Captain Marvel 2 is officially in development at Marvel Studios.

However, THR notes there will be some major changes behind the scenes on the upcoming sequel. Captain Marvel writers and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will not be returning. Instead, they “are in talks to remain in the Marvel Universe and direct a possible Disney+ series.”

Instead, Megan McDonnell is in final negotiations to write the script. She’s coming off of working on another MCU project: WandaVision for Disney+. This is an important detail because Teyonah Parris will be appearing in that series as an older version of Monica Rambeau, Maria Rambeau’s daughter who appeared as a child in the 2019 film. This could mean that WandaVision will be connected to Captain Marvel 2. Rumors have Rambeau working for S.W.O.R.D., the intergalactic equivalent to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel is also searching for a female filmmaker to helm the movie and is hoping to release Captain Marvel 2 in theaters in 2022. The plan is for the sequel to be set in the present day, instead of the 1990s setting of the original film. Brie Larson is expected to reprise her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.

I’m not familiar at all with Captain Marvel, so I have no clue where the sequel could take the character. I did enjoy the 2019 film, but definitely thought it was one of the weaker entries in the MCU. However, her dynamic with a younger Nick Fury was great, so hopefully he’ll appear again in the sequel. And the cat. We need more of Goose the Cat.
