Daisy Ridley Returning as Rey in New ‘Star Wars’ Movie; James Mangold & Dave Filoni Movies Also Announced | Star Wars Celebration 2023

Star Wars fans haven’t seen the last of Daisy Ridley.

The actress will reprise her role as Rey in a new Star Wars film to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Ridley previously portrayed the somewhat-controversial Jedi in Disney’s Sequel Trilogy, which closed out The Skywalker Saga.

The upcoming film will be set 15 years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, following Rey as she builds a new Jedi order. Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is writing the screenplay, replacing Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson who departed the project in March. Sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that the film will likely be the first of the new Star Wars movies released in theaters.

Lucasfilm also announced two additional Star Wars movies with James Mangold and Dave Filoni as directors. Mangold’s film is called Dawn of the Jedi and will be set 25,000 years before any of the timelines and stories told by the movies and shows so far. “When I first started talking to Kathy about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” Mangold said. “And I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”

As for Filoni’s film, his film will be set in the Original Trilogy timeline and will act as a climactic event for the current Star Wars series The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Ahsoka. After the Ahsoka trailer name-dropped Heir to the Empire, could we be looking at a film adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s fan-favorite trilogy of novels?

We’ll keep you posted as more information on these three films becomes available.
