Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Movie Gets “Iced” at Lucasfilm

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Taika Waititi‘s time playing in a galaxy far, far away is over… at least for now.

Speaking with Inverse for his new movie Klara and the Sun, Waititi revealed that his Star Wars movie is no longer in active development at Lucasfilm. First announced in May 2020, it was set to be a standalone installment in the sci-fi franchise, with Waititi directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Tony McNamara.

“I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together,” shared Waititi about the fate of his and McNamara’s Star Wars script. “It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do.”

What are those four movies? Well, there is Judge Dredd with Drew Pearce, and his feature adaptation of the satirical novel Barn 8. Inverse also mentions the What We Do In The Shadows sequel We’re Wolves and the graphic novel adaptation The Incal, so Waititi isn’t exactly going to be hurting if his Star Wars movie never gets warmed up.

Of course, Waititi himself thinks his Star Wars movie isn’t officially dead. “Ice ages do come to an end. Who knows?” he teased.

In the meantime, Star Wars is refocusing on the Skywalker Saga, with Jon Watts tapped to direct the untitled Episode X, which will be the first in a new trilogy scripted by Simon Kinberg. But before that happens, Lucasfilm will release Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling next year.

As for Klara and the Sun, the dystopian sci-fi film arrives in theaters on October 23, 2026.
