Denzel Washington in The Little Things.

Sorry, Tom Cruise, but Christopher McQuarrie has replaced you with Denzel Washington.

According to Deadline, United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios have greenlit an untitled thriller written by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner that has Washington set to star, McQuarrie on board to direct, and an October 1, 2027, theatrical release confirmed.

The plot centers on a former police detective serving a life sentence who is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release with six months to live, he returns home to the estranged daughter he left behind and a grandson he never knew existed. He only wants to make amends and forget his dark past, but his dark past has not forgotten him.

The untitled thriller will be McQuarrie’s first movie not to star Cruise since his directorial debut, 2000’s The Way of the Gun. The McQuarrie-Cruise partnership is arguably one of the best director-actor combos that Hollywood has seen emerge in the last 20 years, with the pair working together on five Mission: Impossible movies, Edge of Tomorrow, Valkyrie, The Mummy, Top Gun: Maverick, and the Jack Reacher films.

Are you excited to see McQuarrie direct a non-Cruise movie?
