Deadline has confirmed that Jonah Hauer-King has beat out other actors like Krypton‘s Cameron Cuffe to secure the role of Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid.
Hauer-King joins an all-star cast that includes Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Javier Bardem as King Triton.
The Disney live-action remake will be directed by Rob Marshall. Marshall is also producing with John DeLuca, Marc Platt, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film will feature beloved songs from the animated classic by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as new songs by Menken (music) and Miranda (lyrics).
Disney continues to rake in the money by remaking hits from its animated canon. This year alone, live-action/CGI remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King both grossed over $1 billion at the global box office.
I can’t speak on if Hauer-King will be good in the role as I haven’t seen him in anything before, but he certainly looks like the animated counterpart. Whether that means anything talent wise is left to the imagination.
With Hauer-King’s casting, it also looks like all the major roles for the remake have been cast. I expect that within the next month or two we will get an official cast list released by Disney as filming kicks off.
Do you think Hauer-King will be good opposite Bailey’s Ariel?
