The Avengers may have needed to invent time travel to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, but they may have inadvertently created their next big bad as a consequence.
Ant-Man 3 has reportedly cast Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country) as Kang the Conqueror. The actor has been on a hot streak lately, having appeared recently in such critically acclaimed projects as The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Da 5 Bloods, and Lovecraft Country. It was only a matter of time before Marvel wanted to scoop him up.
According to Deadline, Majors has signed on for one of the lead roles in the upcoming sequel alongside returning stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. Peyton Reed returns to direct. The film is gearing up for a June 2021 production start date for a 2022 release.
What makes Kang an interesting addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is his potential to appear in numerous other projects. His real name is Nathaniel Richards, and he is possibly a descendant of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic from the 31st-century. This allows Marvel to begin setting up the Fantastic Four in the MCU before they actually receive a solo film.
As well, Kang has fought the Avengers time-and-time again in the comics, so, while it’s being said he will be one of the main villains of Ant-Man 3, there’s a chance the character could be the next overarching mastermind for Phase 4 & 5.
Of course, Marvel hasn’t actually confirmed who Majors will be playing, so there is always a chance he’s just Laurence Fishburne’s son or something lame like that. Although, Marvel casting Majors as Bill Foster Jr. who takes on the identity of Goliath in the MCU wouldn’t be such a bad idea. If the third Ant-Man film is also rumored to introduce Cassie Lang as Stature, there’s a chance we’re looking at the beginnings of an Ant Family (which really doesn’t have the same ring to it as DC’s Bat Family does).
