DC Studios is moving quickly to lock down an actor to play the DC Universe‘s John Stewart in Lanterns.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is between Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Stephan James (Homecoming) for the role of the fan-favorite Green Lantern. Damson Idris (Snowfall) was also reportedly on the shortlist but is no longer in contention. Sources indicate that a decision on who will play Stewart could be made by the end of the weekend. Whoever does get cast will co-lead the forthcoming HBO limited series with Kyle Chandler, who is attached to play Hal Jordan.

In Lanterns, per the logline, two intergalactic cops, new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, find themselves “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” The series has been described as tonally similar to True Detective.

The creative team for Lanterns consists of Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comic book writer Tom King. Mundy will also serve as showrunner on the eight-episode series. Filming is expected to kick off in January 2025.

We’ll keep you posted as more casting becomes available.
