There’s a lot of breaking news in Hollywood happening every minute. In the age of the blockbuster, it’s easy for some smaller movie and television news to slip through the crack. Last Week in Hollywood is our new weekly series highlighting all the interesting news from the last week that we thought didn’t warrant its own post, but was still worth mentioning. It’s less personal opinions and more a hearty roundup of what you might have missed.
Marvel Finds Armor Wars Head Writer
According to Variety, Yassir Lester (Black Monday) has signed on as head writer of Armor Wars. The upcoming Marvel Studios Disney+ series will star Don Cheadle as Rhodey / War Machine as he deals with Tony Stark’s tech falling into the wrong hands. It is based on the comic series of the same name.
Cobra Kai Renewed for Season 5
Netflix has renewed Cobra Kai for a fifth season. The renewal comes months ahead of its season 4 premiere date. Production on the Karate Kid follow-up series’ fifth season is set to begin in Atlanta this fall.
The renewal is good news for fans of the series who know the showrunners have plenty planned for the characters. In January, executive producer and co-showrunner Josh Heald told TVLine: “In our minds, we have seasons’ worth of story that is necessary to tell before we get to that endgame.”
New Thriller Shut In Announced For 2022
Shut In, an upcoming thriller, is set for release in January 2022. The movie was directed by D.J. Caruso (xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage) and stars Rainey Qualley (Love In The Time Of Corona), sister of actress Margaret Qualley.
Shut In centers on “a young single mother (Qualley) who is held captive along with her two children by a violent ex as she plots their escape before it’s too late.” It is the second feature length film from media company / multi-platform site The Daily Wire, and will exclusively release to the site’s members first. An international launch afterwards is planned.
Victoria Mahoney to Direct The Old Guard 2
Deadline reports that Victoria Mahoney has been hired to direct The Old Guard 2 for Netflix. Stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will all return to reprise their roles from the first film.
Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the first film, remains on board as a producer. Greg Rucka, whose co-created the graphic novels the films are based on, will pen the sequel.
Marvel Adapting Werewolf by Night for Disney+ Special
A rumor is going around that Marvel Studios is working on an adaptation of its Werewolf by Night comics for Disney+. The Wrap reports that Marvel “is actively searching for a Latino actor to lead the cast of an as-yet-untitled Halloween Special that will air on Disney+.”
According to their sources, it wants “a Latino male in his 30s” to star and is looking to commence production in early 2022. Marvel and Disney+ also have the
Downton Abbey Sequel Gets New Title & Release Date
The upcoming sequel to the 2019 Downton Abbey movie has now been revealed to be titled Downton Abbey: A New Era. It will hit theaters exclusively on March 18, 2022.
Simon Curtis (The Art of Racing in the Rain) directs from a screenplay written by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park). The whole main cast from the TV series and first film are expected to return.
The Witches of Eastwick Remake in Development
The 1987 fantasy-comedy The Witches of Eastwick is being remade by Warner Bros. with Ninja Thyberg (Pleasure) writing and directing. The news comes via Screen Daily. A start date for shooting has yet to be determined, but the movie will film in the United States.
Matrix 4 Gets Official Title
The Matrix 4 has been officially titled The Matrix Resurrections. The film is still set to hit theaters and HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
