Legendary Developing a MonsterVerse Series for Apple TV+

THR has reported that Legendary and Apple TV+ have teamed up for a new original live-action show set in Legendary’s MonsterVerse.

Per Apple, which made the announcement Thursday, the series will be set after “the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and [focus on] the shocking new reality that monsters are real.” It will explore “one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”

Okay, the most interesting part about that synopsis is that it will be set after the events of 2014’s Godzilla instead of after last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong. I’m wondering if the family will have any ties to the characters introduced in the ’70s-set Kong: Skull Island? I know some people online were joking that now was the perfect time to reveal that Bryan Cranston’s character from Godzilla had an identical twin brother (and honestly, who wouldn’t want Cranston leading an Apple TV+ MonsterVerse series?).

Chris Black (Star Trek Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Marvel Comics’ Hawkeye) are co-creators of the show. Black will also serve as showrunner.

Although there was once talk of the MonsterVerse ending with Godzilla vs. Kong (mostly due to 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters poor reception and box office), the 2021 monster mash was a box office smash (even for pre-pandemic standards). The MonsterVerse is now healthy and alive with plans for another feature length film (rumored to be Son of Kong) in early development.

I’m all for more monsters, so give me what you got, Apple!
