Margot Robbie to Headline Next ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Installment

What the kraken is going on with Pirates of the Caribbean 6?!

Margot Robbie is set to headline the next installment in the popular Disney franchise based on the equally popular theme park attraction, The Hollywood Reporter says. Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) is set to write the female-fronted film. The idea isn’t for this to be a spin-off of the franchise, but the next standalone chapter in the series.

I have no issue with Robbie having a role in a Pirates of the Caribbean film, but I am against just abandoning the main narrative that has been established in the last five films. The PotC films are about Elizabeth Swan, Will Turner, and Jack Sparrow. You need at least one of them or else the film is just capitalizing on the brand name.

This female-fronted film is currently in the early stages of development. It remains separate from the reboot we first heard about in 2019 (which I was also against). Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the previous films, will also produce Robbie’s movie and the reboot.

Johnny Depp has headlined the PotC franchise since the first 2003 film. It earned him an Academy Award nomination. He’s one of only actors to appear in all five films. 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales may not have made as much money as the previous three films, but it was way better than 2011’s On Stranger Tides. Dead Men also ended with a cliffhanger teasing an epic sixth film. I don’t want to see that plot thread left dangling. I want to see it resolved. If they want Margot Robbie to be the new face of the PotC franchise, I’m okay with that. I just don’t want Disney and company to act like the first five films never happened. Wrap up the main narrative and set sail on a new one. That’s all I’m asking.

What are your thoughts on the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 news? Do you want to see Jack Sparrow’s story wrap up, or is this female-fronted film Disney’s best bet?
