Harry Potter isn’t the only popular film franchise that is getting remade on television. An animated adaptation of Twilight is finally moving ahead at Netflix after three years in development.

Lionsgate first revealed plans to bring Twilight to the small screen in April 2023. In March 2024, the project was confirmed to be an animated series, with Netflix coming aboard that September. At that time, it was revealed that the series would be an episodic animated adaptation of Midnight Sun, Stephanie Meyer’s 2020 companion novel that retells the events of Twilight from the perspective of Edward Cullen.

The latest update on the Twilight animated series came during Lionsgate’s Q2 2027 earnings call (via What’s on Netflix), where Kevin Beggs, Chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group, confirmed that Netflix had given the show a two-season commitment:

“That’s a 2-season adult animation order at Netflix. Stephenie and her team are very hands-on, really running the process along with us at Netflix.”

Beggs explained that Meyer’s love of television, and animation in particular, “really led directly to the adaptation of Midnight Sun.” He added that Lionsgate has “high expectations” for the series and sees it as a “continuation and expansion” of The Twilight Saga.

The film version of The Twilight Saga was released when YA adaptations were all the rage. The five-film franchise, which starred Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, collectively grossed more than $3.4 billion worldwide. With Hollywood incapable of letting an IP rest, it’s no surprise to see Twilight revived and reimagined in a new way. You gotta milk that cow ’til it’s dry, after all.
