I can’t believe I’m writing this, but after 15 long years, it looks like The Adventures of Tintin 2 is actually going to happen.
Peter Jackson confirmed to Gold Derby that he will make his narrative feature return with Tintin 2. The filmmaker has spent the last decade directing documentaries (mostly about the Beatles). He hasn’t directed a narrative feature since 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
“Fran [Walsh] and I have been writing a script for the next Tintin film because 15 years ago, Steven Spielberg directed a Tintin film and I produced it,” shared Jackson. “The idea was that then I was supposed to go straight onto a second one, and we’d swap the roles, so I’d direct the second one and he’d produce it. It’s just taken 15 years to get there, unfortunately, a bit late. But it’s a timeless story. So we just wrapped up. So probably the next film that I’d actually direct is a Tintin movie.”
Two months ago, Jackson stated that he was writing Tintin 2. Now, the script is “wrapped up.” I’m likely how quickly this sequel is (finally) coming together. Could we see this before the end of the 2020s? I hope so!
The Adventures of Tintin was released in 2011. It was made with motion-capture technology, with Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, and Daniel Craig, among others, acting out the scenes on set in addition to voicing their characters.
In the animated adventure movie, Tintin, Snowy, and Captain Haddock search for the treasure of the Unicorn, but face dangerous pursuit by the villainous Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine. It was based on three volumes from Hergé’s Tintin comic book series — The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure.
The Adventures of Tintin is one of my favorite movies, and is popular in the Wasteland, having made both our 100 Greatest Animated Films and 100 Hidden Gems of the 2010s lists. So, yeah, I’ll be keeping you posted on Tintin 2 no matter how small an update it might be.
