Morbius was only the beginning.
Hot on the hells of Morbius, which has become everyone’s new favorite film (step aside, The Godfather), Sony has announced a new Marvel movie: El Muerto.
Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known by his stage name Bad Bunny, will be playing the titular role, a Latino superhero who moonlights as a Luchador and has a special mask that grants him super strength, among other powers.
The character is pretty obscure in Marvel Comics. He only showed up for a couple of issues and hasn’t had any new storylines or appearances in years. I have no clue what source material the poor writer in charge of scripting this film will pull from, but maybe that’s a blessing in disguise? Let the screenwriter create an original, compelling script featuring the character. It doesn’t even have to be a superhero movie. Use El Muerto to make Marvel’s Joker. I doubt it’ll happen, but I can dream, right?
The news was revealed during Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon on Monday. At the very least, Ocasio seems excited to star in the film, telling those in attendance:
“This opportunity to bring El Muerto to life is amazing, it’s incredible. I grew up loving wrestling, and this is why I love this character.”
Sony has already dated El Muerto for a theatrical release on January 12, 2024. So yeah, this film is happening whether we want it or not.
Do you think Sony is scrapping the bottle of the barrel now with its roster of Marvel characters? Maybe an Aunt May movie doesn’t sound like such a bad idea after all.
