And just like that, it’s 2007 all over again.
As the dust settles on the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are ready to bring Transformers back to the big screen with a new movie whose creative direction will be overseen by Steven Spielberg.
According to Deadline, Spielberg will both executive produce the untitled Transformers reboot and lead the creative direction for what will be the eighth live-action installment. He held a similar creative role for the first two Transformers films — 2007’s Transformers and 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Additionally, Michael Bay is in early talks to return to the franchise in the director’s chair. Bay directed the first five live-action Transformers movies, with his last being 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight. After his exit, the franchise continued with the prequels Bumblebee in 2018 and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023.
The Transformers franchise has struggled at the box office since the release of the fourth movie, 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction. So, obviously Paramount is hoping that reteaming Bay and Spielberg will be what the series needs to win over audiences again.
Jason Fuchs wrote the latest draft of the Transformers reboot script. Plot details are under wraps other than the film being set in modern day.
As the project is in early development, no cast details yet, although Spielberg and Transformers franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura reportedly want this next movie to honor the spirit of the early Transformers films. So, does that mean Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox are coming back? That’s certainly one way to get OG fans interested in this movie.
If not, which younger stars could be compared to LaBeouf and Fox? I mean, obviously Sydney Sweeney is this generation’s Megan Fox, but what about Shia? I don’t think he’s similar to Shia, but Gabriel LaBelle has the talent to front a major blockbuster. I mean, he played young Spielberg after all!
Either way, we’ll keep you posted.
