Warner Bros. and DC Films‘ in-development Supergirl solo movie is reportedly targeting an early 2020 production start.
The DC Extended Universe didn’t exactly get off on the right foot as their first three films were met with mixed reception. It was only after Wonder Woman that things started to look up, and Aquaman and Shazam! proved DC might have found its footing.
Oren Uziel was hired to write the script for Supergirl last year, and since then there was been a whole lot of rumors and not much in terms of concrete facts.
We Got It Covered recently heard that casting is set to begin over the next few months. Apparently, it will also plant the seeds for a new Superman to be introduced down the line as it’ll reboot the Kryptonian mythology of the DCEU. It will also be set in the 1970s. So the rumors of Henry Cavill being out as Superman may just be true.
Additionally, they state that Warner Bros. is looking to split the continuity of the DCEU into two. Characters like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam, and teams like the Suicide Squad, and Birds of Prey will continue to operate in the original (dare I say prime) universe. Meanwhile, Supergirl and Matt Reeves’ The Batman will be set in its own new DC universe. Heck, while I’m throwing hot rumors into this post I might as well mention I’ve seen posts mentioning Lucas Till is in talks to replace Ezra Miller as The Flash. DC is a hot mess right now.
I can’t see Warner Bros. creating two concurrent universes, but I can see them put an emphasis on standalone films with less connective tissue. Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, and Zachary Levi are fan favorites now thanks to their portrayals of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam, so WB would be foolish to recast them. What I see happening is Matt Reeves’ Batman being set in its own universe, and Supergirl maybe being set in the 1970s, but having a heavier focus on Krypton decades before what we saw of the civilization in Man of Steel.
I’m game for Warner Bros. and DC Films to make films that don’t focus on Superman or Batman, and I could really care less if they are all set in the same universe. They should just pull a page from their animated division and make films adapting certain comics arcs and casting actors who best fit that role. They can be changed to form loose trilogies or universes, or they can be standalone tales. If Joker is a huge success this fall, there’s a chance DCEU could end up standing for DC Elseworlds Universe.
