‘Velma’ First Look: ‘Scooby-Doo’ Gets an Adult HBO Max Series

Mindy Kaling has shown off the first official image from Velma, an upcoming animated adult series coming to HBO Max.

The image shows Velma in a women’s locker room surrounded by naked women (with soapy bubbles covering key bodily areas) and staring at a dead female body that has been sawed open at the head and is now missing a brain. If that description doesn’t immediately clue you in that this isn’t going to be your grandpa’s Scooby-Doo then I don’t know what will.

Kaling will voice Velma Dinkley and the character will be portrayed as a POC for the first time. “Hopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian,” Kaling said to those in attendance at the Warner Bros Discovery Upfront presentation. “If people freak out about that, I don’t care.”

The project was first announced in February 2021. The series will tell “the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang.” Based on the first look, I think it’s safe to say that the series will be pulling more than a couple of pages from the playbook of Harley Quinn, HBO Max’s other adult animated series. Do I smell a crossover?

No release date has been set for Velma at this time. We’ll keep you posted.

Will you be watching Velma? Do you think the rest of Mystery Inc. will make an appearance?
