MOVIES WATCHED THIS WEEK

The Crow (1994)

“A man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder.”

After watching the episode on The Crow from Shudder’s series called Cursed Films, I had to give this a rewatch. I appreciated Brandon Lee’s performance even more and it makes me sad that tragedy took place while also feeling selfish for wishing we could have received more of this character from him. If we were to do a list of the most 90s movies ever, The Crow would rank pretty high. It’s grunge, dark and moody with that 90s rock feel throughout. The action is entertaining. The visuals are still stunning. The movie is still a fun revenge thrill ride. (4.25/5)

Evil Dead (2013)

“Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.”

Talk about a pure body clencher from beginning to end. This is one of the few movies that actually makes me tense up during every watch. I love and respect the Sam Raimi originals but this is how you do a horror remake. You change enough for it not to feel like an exact reshoot but there are enough elements there to honor the original and tell a fresh story. The use of practical effects enhanced the horror to help make you feel uncomfortable and everyone played their parts well. (4/5)

Nocturnal Animals (2016)

“A wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband’s novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale.”

Well directed and well-acted as Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhall, and Michael Shannon are some of my favorites but none of this could get me to care about this movie. I try not to throw out the dreaded “B” word during my reviews too much but this was booorrring. The symbolism and visual storytelling feel so on the nose like some bad dad joke where he goes “Do you get it? She is wearing a green dress which was the color of the bad guy’s car in the story that just so happened to be the color of the car right behind the guy she broke up with who wrote the story and who she is now going to meet! Do you get it?!” There is great movie in there somewhere though. It was at its best when Shannon was on screen and it does have some great visuals. (3.25/5)

 TV SHOWS WATCHED

Schitt’s Creek S1.E1-6

“When rich video-store magnate Johnny Rose and his family suddenly find themselves broke, they are forced to leave their pampered lives to regroup in Schitt’s Creek.”

I have had a hard time getting into any TV shows lately and I honestly couldn’t tell you why but I decided to give this a try since it’s only 30 min episodes and lighthearted. It has its moments with some chuckles here and there. My favorite part of the show is the rich son David and the motel clerk Stevie’s interactions. My biggest complaint that may actually make me stop watching the show is Chris Elliott. He is the worst. He isn’t funny and never has been to me. I think if there was someone better in this role, I would like this show that much more.
