In 1991, Tim Zahn’s novel Heir to the Empire hit Star Wars fandom like a Death Star blast, breathing new life into a dead franchise and setting off a chain reaction that would keep the Star Wars machine going strong with hundreds of books, comics, and toys for another two decades. These days, Zahn’s novels are classified as “Legends”, but there are rumors that the Mandoverse is building toward a loose adaptation of Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy. I’m not ready to discount that bit of speculation just yet after finding out Ashoka Tano is searching for him in Season 2 of The Mandalorian.
Anything could happen at this point.
Whether Zahn’s books ever find their way onto the screen in any form, though, those novels continue to be among the most popular EU books ever written, and Thrawn remains a compelling villain for the Star Wars franchise.
While I loved Zahn’s novels, I never got around to reading the Dark Horse adaptations, but I love the cover art by Mathieu Lauffray. And my favorite has to be for issue #6. There’s something about that stormtrooper helmet that is so menacing, and the colors just so perfectly capture the sense of magic and adventure I feel whenever I revisit the original films.
What are your thoughts on this cover art for Heir to the Empire? Like it? Nah? Tell us all about it in the comments below.
