Howard Chaykin was apparently personally selected by George Lucas (Lucas is a big comic art fan) to draw Marvel’s comic adaptation of Star Wars. This poster, also drawn by Chaykin, was a limited edition piece commissioned in 1976 and released at San Diego Comic Con and World Con to create buzz for the film.
I love the central elements of this with the characters framed against the exploding Death Star, but I’m not the biggest fan of the ships. The look almost photorealistic compared to the comic book style of the characters and Death Star. Other than the ships, I love the design of this. Vader’s red eyes, the position of the lightsaber over one of his eyes, the colors, and the way the characters are positioned all just work really well for me.
