James Gunn Talks ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’

James Gunn is currently the only director in Hollywood to have films in development for both DC Films and Marvel Studios. His unique direction has resulted in two hotly anticipated films: The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Gunn recently revealed the entire cast list for The Suicide Squad, but didn’t reveal who anyone was playing. In the past, he teased that he pulled inspiration from John Ostrander’s original 1980s run. Now that’s been confirmed, as Gunn responded to a fan on Instagram with the following:

“The original Squad was a group of adventurers, soldiers, and scientists, who explored and battled anomalous events. Ostrander introduced the idea of the Dirty Dozen with disposable, second-rate supervillains. King Shark didn’t enter the team till the 2000s. [Our] movie takes elements from all those timelines but is especially indebted to Ostrander (and Kim Yale).”

King Shark is one of the rumored characters to be appearing in The Suicide Squad, but Gunn seems to downplay that notion a bit, by reminding fans that the character didn’t appear as a member of Task Force X until the 2000s. That doesn’t mean that he still won’t appear, but it’s clear Gunn wants to keep his cards close to his chest for the time being.

Meanwhile, Comicbook shared an exchange between Gunn and another fan on how long it takes him to write his screenplays. In responding, Gunn dropped a tidbit on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3:

“…Guardians Vol. 3 took a year, The Specials took a week and Super took maybe three weeks. It’s always different.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set up a number of potential storylines in its FIVE post-credits scenes for Vol. 3 to pick up on, in addition to Avengers: Endgame leaving the MCU with a 2014 pre-Guardians version of Gamora. I’d die to get my hands on the Vol. 3 script to see what Gunn has planned for this ragtag group of jackasses.

The Suicide Squad hits theaters August 6, 2021. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2023.

You can only watch one, the other you will be banned from seeing: The Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Which do you pick?
