Contrary to earlier reports, Screen Rant confirms via Joel Kinnaman‘s Instagram that he’s back on board for the James Gunn directed sequel to Suicide Squad.
Foregoing the ‘2’ in the title, The Suicide Squad will see a stable of DC’s worst villains band together (because of the bombs in their necks) to do something incredibly dangerous on behalf of the US government (again, because of the bombs in their necks.)
Kinnaman will reprise his role as Rick Flag, the US operative acting as handler to the team of misfits and will rejoin Jai Courtney, Margot Robbie and Viola Davis (Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller respectively) while new characters played by Idris Elba, John Cena, David Dastmalchian (as Polka-Dot Man) and Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher) will presumably be suiting up to join, or possibly oppose the ‘Squad.
So like many people, I think Suicide Squad was extremely flawed, but we got to see hints of what could have been throughout; there’s enough iconic little moments that could have helped to make it a great film but the stench of overzealous studio involvement hints that it was somewhat doomed from the top floor down. Also Guardians of the Galaxy was really great and someone with executive powers really wanted a DC version of Guardians of the Galaxy.
They kind of got their wish, with then-estranged-from-Marvel James Gunn signing on to direct a sequel; here’s hoping that Warner Bros. have learned a little lesson in humility and will let Gunn’s freak flag fly with this production.
The Suicide Squad is slated for release on 6 August 2021.
What do you think, Wasteoids? Is a Suicide Squad sequel under new direction something you want to see? Flag seems essential in theory as a straightfaced no nonsense guy for the crazies to bounce off (although he was dating one of them, who was an ancient goddess, but they needed him to keep an eye out for her who he was in love with…damn that movie was a mess.)
