There’s a lot of breaking news in Hollywood happening every minute. In the age of the blockbuster, it’s easy for some smaller movie and television news to slip through the crack. Last Week in Hollywood is our new weekly series highlighting all the interesting news from the last week that we thought didn’t warrant its own post, but was still worth mentioning. It’s less personal opinions and more a hearty roundup of what you might have missed.


Michael Giacchino to Direct Them!

Michael Giacchino will make his big-screen directing debut with Them!, a reboot of the 1954 sci-fi man-eating monster movie, at Warner Bros. Giacchino will also score the upcoming film, which is currently meeting with writers. He made his directorial debut last year with Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night.

In the Gordon Douglas-directed original film, “a huge nest of irradiated ants is discovered in the New Mexico desert and becomes a national threat when two young queen ants and their consorts escape to set up new nests. The national search that ensues culminates in a battle in spillways and storm drains of Los Angeles.” | Source: Deadline


M3GAN 2 in the Works

Following a strong performance at the box office, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse have announced a sequel to M3GAN. Titled M3GAN 2.0, the script is being written by Akela Cooper, who wrote the original. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw are expected to return, with producers hoping Gerard Johnstone will also be back in the director’s chair. Zoey 101 Sequel Film Announced

Nickelodeon has started production on a film continuation of Zoey 101, with Jamie Lynn Spears reprising her role as the titular character. She will be joined by fellow original cast members Erin Sanders as Quinn Pensky”, Sean Flynn as Chase Matthews, Matthew Underwood as Logan Reese, Christopher Massey as Michael Barrett, Abby Wilde as Stacey Dillsen, and Jack Salvatore as Mark Del Figgalo.

Currently titled Zoey 102, the film will reintroduce fans to the Pacific Coast Academy alumni as they reunite for a wedding in the present day. Production is underway in North Carolina, with Nancy Hower directing from a script by Monica Sherer & Madeline Whitby. Zoey 102 will premiere later this year exclusively on Paramount+. | Source: Variety


Jason Bateman to Direct The Pinkerton

Jason Bateman is set to direct The Pinkerton, a supernatural revenge-western hybrid from Warner Bros. and Bad Robot. F9’s Daniel Casey wrote the script.

The Pinkertons were a private security guard and detective agency established in the U.S. by Scotsman Allan Pinkerton in 1850. Pinkerton became famous when he claimed to have foiled a plot to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln, who later hired Pinkerton agents for his personal security during the Civil War. | Source: Deadline

  • Titans and Doom Patrol have been canceled by HBO Max. Both series will end with their respective fourth seasons. (Deadline)
  • Kurt Wimmer‘s remake of Stephen King’s Children of the Corn has been picked up by RLJE Films and Shudder. The movie will hit theaters on March 3 in an 18-day theatrical window before hitting demand and digital on March 21. (Deadline)
  • Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin has been renewed for a second season at Peacock. (Deadline)
  • The Madonna biopic set at Universal Pictures has been scrapped. The film would have been directed by Madonna, having penned drafts of the script with both Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson. Julia Garner would have starred as the iconic singer. (Deadline)
