During yesterday’s Disney Investor Day presentation, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige made some amazing announcements. We already reported on the two Guardians of the Galaxy projects here, so let’s dive in to the rest of the Disney+ series that were announced.
She-Hulk
Feige confirmed that Tatiana Maslany will be starring in She-Hulk as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. He also announced that Mark Ruffalo will be returning as Bruce Banner/Hulk. No word on whether that will be Smart Hulk or if She-Hulk will see the two identities separated once again.
However, probably the most surprising casting news of Marvel’s presentation was that Tim Roth would be returning as the Abomination in the series. Roth was last seen as the Abomination in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. It’s nice to see The Incredible Hulk finally get some love in the greater MCU. The Abomination was once considered for an appearance in the first Avengers film, but that obviously never happened. Fingers crossed for more Incredible Hulk returning stars making an appearance.
It was also announced that Anu Valia will be directing some episodes of the series, in addition to the previously announced Kat Coiro.
Secret Invasion
We reported back in September that a Nick Fury series was in development for Disney+. Well, it turns out that that was sort of true.
Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury in Secret Invasion, which Feige called the most significant crossover event since Civil War in the pages of Marvel Comics. Ben Mendelsohn will also return as Talos, the Skrull who first appeared in Captain Marvel and later disguised himself as Fury on Earth in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
No word yet on how this series will tie into the larger MCU, but this could very well be an Avengers-level crossover event for Disney+.
Ironheart
Two Iron Man legacy series were also announced. The first was Ironheart, based on a recent addition to Marvel Comics. Dominique Thorne has been cast as Riri Williams/Ironheart, “a young Black girl who’s a genius inventor that creates a suit of armor that rivals Tony Stark’s.”
Personally, I’m hoping to see Harley Keener (Ty Simpkins) make an appearance. He formed a unique bond with Tony in Iron Man 3 that obviously continued given his cameo in Avengers: Endgame. It would be cool to see him become Iron Lad, and maybe even have Riri and Harley as the next Tony and Pepper?
Armor Wars
The other Iron Man series will be Armor Wars. Don Cheadle is returning as Jim Rhodes/War Machine to deal with “what goes down when the advanced technology that the late Tony Stark developed falls into the wrong hands.” I think there’s a lot of potential for this to be really cool. Hopefully we’ll see other Iron Man characters like Happy, Pepper, Morgan Stark, and maybe even Riri Williams appear.
