It’s official: Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler will be this generation’s Tubbs and Crockett in Joseph Kosinski‘s Miami Vice ’85.
Yup, per Deadline, that’s the new title for the upcoming reboot, which, unlike the 2006 movie starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, will take the action back to the ’80s.
According to previously shared plot details, Kosinski’s Miami Vice ’85 will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
The original Miami Vice was a TV show starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives in South Florida. It aired on NBC for five seasons from 1984 to 1989.
Butler and Jordan were first reported last fall to be in talks for Miami Vice ’85, but, as production was not expected to begin until this fall, Universal was in no hurry to close deals. However, with fall approaching fast, the budget was approved and deals for the two actors were closed.
Miami Vice ’85 will be shot for IMAX. Dan Gilroy is writing the script. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. The film will be produced by Dylan Clark and his Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski.
Miami Vice ’85 is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
What do you think of Jordan and Butler as Tubbs and Crockett? Good casting or a bit too Hollywood for your liking?
